Institutional Student Learning Outcomes
The Institutional Student Learning Outcomes (ISLOs) at Palm Beach State College define what students College-wide will be prepared to achieve upon the completion of any program.
List of Outcomes
Outcome 1: Communication
Students will demonstrate appropriate organization, language, style, content, sources and delivery when communicating within the subject area.
Outcome 2: Qualitative
Students will examine varying perspectives and exhibit knowledge of civic and social responsibility, politics, government, cultural literacy and information literacy within the subject area.
Outcome 3: Quantitative
Students will collect, analyze, and interpret data, draw conclusions, and solve problems that require computational fluency, scientific reasoning and/or evidence-based methodology within the subject area.
Outcomes and General Education
PBSC's Institutional Student Learning Outcomes embed the College's philosophy of general education into each of the outcomes. The philosophy is defined by the College's General Education Statement.
General Education Statement
The general education program at Palm Beach State College offers an interdisciplinary core curriculum that advances transformative thinking to prepare students for responsible participation in a global community.
General Education Courses
General education courses at Palm Beach State College meet a range of criteria to ensure the appropriateness of the curriculum. The courses:
- support the PBSC general education philosophy and at least one applicable institutional student learning outcome.
- fit within at least one Career Pathway.
- support internal programs and transfer to in-state public universities.
- fit within one of the following areas: communication, humanities (literature and fine arts), mathematics, natural science or social science to align with state and accreditation requirements.
- include “high-level academic and critical thinking skills” to align with state requirements.
- contribute to general education as a whole, rounding out the “breadth of knowledge” to align with regional accreditation requirements.
- reinforce cognitive skills and are not focused on “skills, techniques and procedures specific to the student’s occupation or profession” to align with regional accreditation requirements.
