Date Adopted/Amended: Formerly P003.00; Readopted 2/27/1975; Amended 2/20/1977, 6/17/1981, 10/21/1981, 9/18/1985, 10/28/1987, 1/20/1988, 6/13/1990, 1/10/1996, 6/19/2001, 5/12/2009, 6/17/2025
Each full-time employee shall earn one day of sick leave with compensation for each calendar month, or major fraction of a calendar month, of service not to exceed twelve (12) days for each fiscal year;
Sick leave shall be cumulative from year to year. Accumulated sick leave from which no terminal payment was received may be transferred from another Florida College, the Florida Department of Education, the Florida University System, a Florida district school board, or a Florida State agency; provided that at least one-half (1/2) of the sick leave accumulated at any time must have been established during employment at Palm Beach State College.
Sick leave may be requested for the following reasons:
- The employee’s own illness, injury, medical condition, or mandated medical quarantine where the employee is unable to perform their assigned duties.
- The illness, injury, or medical condition of a member of the employee’s immediate family (spouse, parent, sibling, child), or other close relative or member of the employee’s household that causes the employee to be absent from work.
- Appointments with health care providers for the employee or the employee’s immediate family (spouse, parent, sibling, child), or other close relative or member of the employee’s household.
- Bereavement leave for the death of an employee’s immediate family (spouse, parent, sibling, child) or other close relative or member of the employee’s household.
The College may require a certificate of illness from a licensed physician in cases where illness is stated as a reason for absence, as a condition precedent to payment of compensation or granting of leave and in in accordance with the companion procedure 6Hx-18-5.03P. An employee who fails to provide the requested medical documentation may forfeit compensation for the time of such absence and may be subject to disciplinary action.
Any full-time employee having sufficient unused sick leave balance shall receive full compensation for the requested time absent as sick leave as approved by the supervisor.
Fixed-term employees who are paid through a grant or gift shall have their sick balance accounted for separately while they are in the grant or gift funded position.
- If an employee in a grant or gift funded position is transferred, promoted, demoted, or moves to a regular position that accrues sick time, one day of sick (up to 8 hours) shall transfer from the grant sick balance to the regular sick balance each calendar month that regular sick accrues.
- If an employee in a regular position is transferred, promoted, demoted, or moves to a grant or gift funded position, the regular sick time account shall be maintained and utilized first until a zero balance is reached.
